On the corner where they meet is a statue of Ignacio Allende in a niche high on the building once his home. Allende, hero of Mexican Independence, was born and plotted revolution in San Miguel.

As I watch the flow at this busy intersection, there are San Miguelese, Otomi, chilangos, campagneros, ninos, viejos, snowbirds, ex-pats, artists, vendors, wedding guests and tourists from around the world. Not to mention horses, bicycles, brides and dogs. There is a lot to take in.

The energy of this mingling of cultures, species, ages, and activities plays out under Allende’s watchful gaze.

So it is said, and so I have experienced.

El Jardin, with surrounding plazas, serves as the living room, exercise track, playground, music venue, event space and center of commerce for San Miguelese and visitors. There are wedding processions, engagements, quinceanera, and other cultural and religious celebrations. Mariachi bands serenade. Kids play. Indigenous sell their wares. Families enjoy an outing. Viejas ask for donations. Visitors take photos. Vendors offer temptations. Bench-sitters enjoy shade for reading and chatting. Couples do what couples will do.

And for everyone and for every occasion, there’s food---fruit, chips, ice cream, elotes and chicharron topped with just about everything.

Humanness, with a strong heartbeat and vibrant soul, is on display everywhere.

I wander, lift my camera, and click to capture an image of something that has attracted my attention.

As expressed by Rene Magritte, “Everything that is visible hides something that is invisible”. The experience of that observation is my quest.

This portfolio is a collection of images made over more than 15 years. During that time, these seemingly singular images began to talk to each other. A theme emerged. A collection was formed.

Each image makes me hold my breath or feel a catch in my throat or cause a wrinkle in my brow. Occasionally a very slight smile follows. They are about uncovering the hidden---the reference, the symbol, the metaphor. They are personal.

The action can be physical as in the childhood game of Hide-and-Seek, but most often it is not. It is to inquire, search, strive, attempt, in a process that is not always well defined nor direct nor certain. One hopes, however, the seeking will draw or propel one forward.

Seeking is never ending. The simple objective in the childhood game evolves to much more important questions. The process can worry, disorient, frighten, amuse, enlighten. Nonetheless, it is our common hope, I think, that the effort will lead toward knowledge, understanding, wisdom, comfort, memory, and, ultimately, acceptance of what our seeking cannot discover.

An expression of reality, truth, one could say. And yet, in combination with another reality, that truth evolves.

I often incorporate a duality in my photographs. Is it because I have an older sister, an influential identity double? Is it because our way of understanding is through compare and contrast? Is it the serendipity of a new “reality” from juxtaposition or combination?

As stated by Rene Daumal, “Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.” As a technique, I use double exposure to change perception and understanding of the world…bringing memory and complexity and serendipity.
